[A mitochondrial membrane protein, BCL-2 protein is responsible for blocking apoptosis in normal cells. Growth factor-stimulated phosphorylation by PKC promotes anti-apoptotic activity of BCL-2 during G2/M. BCL-2 regulates cell death by controlling mitochondrial membrane permeability. Cleavage by caspases during apoptosis yields a pro-apoptotic BCL-2 product that causes release of cytochrome C into the cytosol, promoting further caspase activity. Over expression from translocation t(14;18) of BCL-2 with the immunoglobulin gene region is involved in B-cell lymphomas. (from OMIM 151430 and NCI) ( NCI )]
