[The magnesium salt of esomeprazole, an S-isomer of omeprazole and a proton pump inhibitor, with antacid activity. Esomeprazole inhibits the enzymatic activity of hydrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) on the gastric parietal cell. In the acidic compartment of the parietal cells, esomeprazole is protonated and converted into its active molecule, the achiral sulphenamide, which reacts and forms covalent bondages with H+/K+-ATPase, thereby interferes with the final step in the gastric acid production.
