[The hydrochloride salt form of demeclocycline, a broad-spectrum, tetracycline derivative exhibiting antimicrobial activity. Demeclocycline hydrochloride binds reversibly to the 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby blocking the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the A-site of the mRNA-ribosome complex. This inhibits protein synthesis. In addition, this agent inhibits ADH-induced water reabsorption in the kidneys, thereby causing diuresis. ( NCI )]
