Anti-human Chorionic Gonadotropin Vaccine
[A synthetic peptide vaccine containing an epitope of the human chorionic gonadotropin beta-subunit with potential antineoplastic activity. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hGC), a hetrodimeric alpha/beta glycoprotein, is secreted by trophoblastic cells during normal gestation and is also an oncofetal tumor antigen. Elevated serum levels of free beta-hCG are seen with trophoblastic and germ cell tumors as well as with some solid tumors such as breast, prostate, colon, pancreatic, renal and lung cancer. The hCG hormone may play a role in tumor progression by functioning as a transforming growth factor, an inducer of metastasis, and as an angiogenesis factor. Vaccination with anti-hCG beta-subunit vaccine may elicit both a humoral and a cellular immune response against hCG-expressing tumor cells, resulting in decreased tumor cell growth.
