[Somatostatin binds to a group of structurally related tissue-specific high-affinity integral membrane GPCRs (family 1), coupled via G proteins to inhibition of adenylyl cyclase. Somatostatin Receptor 2 is expressed highest in the cerebrum and kidney and inhibits DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. SSTR2 appears to antagonize SSTR5, and vice versa, suggesting a tissue-specific function and interaction between these receptors. SSTR2 stimulates phosphotyrosine phosphatase and PLC via G proteins. It also appears to suppress voltage dependent calcium-channels. Two isoforms are produced by alternative splicing. (from OMIM 182452, SWISS-PROT P30874, and NCI) ( NCI )]
