[A pentacyclic pyrolloquinone and an analogue of mitoquidone with anticancer activity. Although the mechanism has not been fully elucidated, fosquidone's antineoplastic activity may be attributed to DNA intercalation or by binding to the minor groove of DNA. In addition, bioreduction of fosquidone's quinine group, resulting in redox cycling, and generation of a cascade of reactive oxygen species, has been suggested to result in DNA damage and/or lipid peroxidation.
